Expert Glasses Style Tips For Men
Since releasing my YouTube video above on styling glasses for men, I’ve received numerous questions about men’s glasses styles and what are the best glasses frames for men. These range from general queries like, “What are the best-looking glasses for men?” to more specific ones such as, or “Will clear glasses suit me?” or“ What are the best glasses with beards?”
These questions aren’t surprising, as the right pair of glasses can significantly influence both how you’re perceived and how you feel about yourself. A well-chosen pair can even become your signature piece, reflecting your personality, enhancing your features, and elevating your overall look in business and in life.
However, selecting the perfect pair of glasses, goes far beyond simply Googling “best-looking glasses and styles for men.” This is because the most flattering style or trend for one man’s face shape, colouring, and personal style may be completely wrong for you.
That’s why, in this article, I’m sharing my top tips for finding glasses that celebrate your unique individuality.
After all, confidence in your personal style is what gives you strength, impact, and presence — and ensures you look and feel great in your glasses.
3 Rules To Great Glasses
Firstly I want to share the three key rules that apply to every man when selecting glasses
Your ideal glasses should:
- Be in balance with your face shape and features.
- Be in a colour that complements your natural colouring and enhances your appearance.
- Express your personal style
Now lets focus in more detail on each of those 3 areas
1. Be in Balance With Your Face and Features
For most men, your glasses are on your face every day, so it’s essential they fit comfortably as well as look good. Below are my top five tips for choosing comfortable and stylish glasses:
- Scale: Your eyewear should be in balance with your natural scale. This means If you are fine-boned with a smaller face and features, finer acetate or metal frames will be more flattering. If you are larger in scale with more prominent or larger facial features, opt for thicker metals or acetates.
- Brow line: Select frames where the upper rim aligns with the shape of your brow line, which for most men is straight or softly curved. This alignment helps create harmony, open up the eye area and balance the face.
- Width: The optimum frame width should match the widest part of your face below the brow line. Frames that are too narrow will make your face appear wider, while frames that are too wide can slip and affect your vision.
- Depth: The depth of the frame (from the top of the lens to the bottom) should be in proportion to the length of your face. If you have a long face, deeper frames with thicker sides can help create balance. If you have a short or smaller face, where the length and width are almost equal, narrower frames with finer sides are more flattering. In addition, semi-rimless frames, with detail primarily at the top, or frames with a lighter colour at the bottom, can help create the illusion of length.
- Angles and Curves: If you have an angular face with well defined cheekbones and a strong jawline, angled or square frames will help accentuate your features for a strong, masculine look, and softer, rounder frames will give you a more approachable look. If your face is softer or rounder, square and strong angular shapes will help to add definition. Whereas softer shapes will harmonise with your natural face and features for a more approachable look
- Facial Hair: If you have a beard, balance the weight and texture of the frame with your facial hair to balance your face.
Because every man’s face and features is unique, searching for the best glasses frames for men is really a very personal thing.
2. Be in a Colour That Complements Your Natural Colouring and Personal Style
Now I’m not saying you need to run out and purchase colourful glasses, but if you are a man looking to elevate your personal eyewear style, understanding your most flattering colours is key to choosing glasses and clothing that enhance your natural features and help you look and feel your best.
Below is my brief guide for each colour type: Apply these colour tips when experimenting with men’s glasses styles to find your ideal colour and style combination.
Light Colouring: If you have light hair, light skin, and light eyes—or if you have very little hair with light eyes— Your best glasses colours will be light to mid depth colours. Glasses colours in light smoky greys, sage greens, and light teals will work well. For a slightly stronger look, you could consider glasses colours in light navy or mid-grey ( these are a great alternative to black for you) The transparent trend, featuring clear glasses frames in light pastel tones, will also suit you well. Avoid very dark or black frames, which can emphasise fine lines and dark circles, making you appear tired.
Deep Colouring: If you are a man with dark hair and dark eyes, your best glasses colours will be deep, intense colours to enhance your deep and strong look. Blacks, navys, and chocolate browns will look fantastic, and if you are looking for something a little different, you’ll also look great in true red, emerald green, and burgundy. Bold, solid statement eyewear is perfect for you. Avoid very pale pastel tones or rimless, which may make you appear tired and washed out.
Warm Colouring: If you have red hair from strawberry blonde, to deep auburn, with a warm skin tone -your best glasses colours are warm, yellow-based colours. Select golden browns over blacks, and golds over silvers. Earthy glasses colours like burnt orange, mustard yellow, and olive green are featuring this season, and will be ideal for you. Avoid cool toned glasses like silvers, icy blues, pinks and blue-reds which may make your skin appear grey.
Cool Colouring: If you have ash-toned, white, or grey hair with blue or cool brown eyes, with a cool skin tone- your best colour glasses are silvers, navy, and greys. Additionally, any blue-based cool colours colours like cobalt blue, teal, and even shades of pink are excellent choices for a bolder frame style. Avoid warm frame colours like gold, yellows and olive greens which may make your skin appear sallow.
Clear Colouring: If you have dark hair with contrasting light or bright eyes- which really stand out- your best glasses colours are high-contrast colours like black and white or vibrant shades like bold red, royal blues, and emerald greens. Selecting Shiny acetates and metals also help intensify the frames colour and will work very well with your colouring. Avoid pale pastel shades which may appear to wash you out.
Soft Colouring: If you have dark blonde or mid-brown hair, with mid-toned eyes and skin, or if you have very little hair with dark eyes, your best glasses colours are mid-depth colours that are neither too dark nor too light. Shades like light navy, mid-grey, sage green, and teals are ideal for you. Mid-toned tortoiseshell frames can also work well. Selecting matte acetates, brushed metals, and interesting frame materials like wood can help soften glasses frame colours and complement your colouring. Avoid very bright or very dark colours which may look too harsh and emphasise fine lines and dark circles.
3. Express Your Personal Style
Finally, the key to finding your best glasses, is to select frames that genuinely reflect your personal style. While some men are drawn to bold, striking glasses and clothing, others will prefer subtle, refined styles.
