Evidence shows that myopia (short-sightedness) is increasing around the world. A recent study highlighted that 30% of the global population is myopic, with a further 50% becoming so by 2050 – that’s a further 5 billion people!

In the last 6 years, myopia diagnoses have doubled in school aged children. Since lockdown with excessive use of screens, optometrists are reporting a surge in myopic cases, often beginning with children struggling to see the classroom board.

Why is this a concern?

Higher levels of myopia are associated with greater eye disease risks. These include retinal detachment, myopic macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts. Without intervention, myopia can progress rapidly throughout childhood and into early adulthood so it is a problem you cannot ignore.

Is there a cure?

Fortunately, there are now things we understand better about myopia. There are brand-new treatments that allow us, as optical practitioners, to manage the condition better. Treatments which significantly slow the progression, with the aim of preventing severe eye health issues & sight loss into adulthood.

Research conducted by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University showed that myopia progression can be managed by providing clear vision and constant myopic defocus simultaneously. These spectacle lenses known as ‘Miyosmart’ have been shown to curb myopia progression by 60%, which can significantly reduce the chance of serious sight loss in the future.
