Can eating chocolate improve your eyesight? We reveal some dark secrets…..
Are you a chocolate addict just desperate to get your hands on some sweet treats this Easter?
If you are anything like me, you’ll devour all your eggs in one weekend, and then feel bloated, sick and guilty that you ate too much!
Well if this is you too, maybe I can help you feel a little better and alleviate those guilty pangs, particularly if your pleasure is polishing off dark chocolate eggs.
Unlike milk and white chocolate, dark chocolate contains a high proportion of Cocoa, and it is this magic ingredient which contains lots of amazing health benefits!
Cocoa – the magic bean
Cocoa is ‘choc full’ of iron, copper, magnesium, fibre, zinc, manganese and selenium, which is incredibly beneficial for the body.
In particular it has copious amounts of antioxidants, flavonoids and flavones which have been shown to lower oxidative stress in the eyes, and can help reduce Optic nerve damage found in Glaucoma- an eye disease where optic nerve damage can lead to vision loss if not treated.
Dark chocolate also contains high levels of Vitamin A which studies have found have can help protect against Macula Degeneration- a gradual deterioration of the retina (back of the eye) and the leading cause of vision loss in adults over 60.
Studies show visual improvement in young adults too
And it’s not just the ageing eye that Cocoa benefits; some studies have shown the visual performance of young adults vastly improves when consuming dark chocolate daily. Studies have shown the improving ability to see letters in low contrast conditions, and increasing motion detection -even leading to a boost in athletic performance! The theory is that the cocoa may increase the blood flow to the retina and brain leading to faster and sharper responses.
It is worth noting however, that moderation is always key and so wearing sunglasses, eating a healthy balanced diet, keeping hydrated and exercising are also good ways to prevent eye damage.
But do enjoy your dark chocolate this Easter, and then perhaps go out for a run – you may just surprise yourself and ignite your inner athlete!
