Spinach

Raw spinach is great in a fresh summer salad and is considered one of the most nutrient dense of all foods. It’s rich in folic acid, vitamin A, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, copper, magnesium, vitamin C, and iron.  It’s also a great source of B vitamins .  In particular, spinach contains the powerful antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are present in the retina and the lens of the eye. These essential pigments help to reduce oxidative stress and absorb blue and UV light acting as a natural sunblock, offering protection to the lens and macula from their harmful effects. Therefore reducing cataracts and macula degeneration.

Macular degeneration is the breakdown of a small area in the retina called the macula, which allows you to see fine details. Over time, these changes can cause a blurring or loss of central vision.

Cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision.

Sun-Dried Tomatoes

Salmon is a great superfood for the eye one of the best sources of eye-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to reduce the risk of Macular degeneration(AMD)

An Ophthalmology study reported that high dietary intakes of omega-3 fatty acids resulted in a 38% reduction in the risk for AMD. Salmon is also a natural source of vitamin D, which may also help reduce macular degeneration.  If you are not a big fan of Salmon, try other fish that are high in omega – 3 fatty acids include sardines, rainbow, trout and mackerel.

Omega 3 fatty acids can also help treat dry eye disease.

Dry eye is a condition caused by a problem with tears and causes your eyes to feel uncomfortable, red, scratchy and irritated.

Cantaloupe is a great superfood for the summer months as it is so dense nutritionally. It is packed full of vitamins A and C, which are known to help lower the risk of developing macular degeneration and cataracts. In fact, it has a richer source of Vitamin A than any other fruit!
